JEE Main 2019 is inching closer and closer, and the candidates are fastening their seatbelts for the biggest engineering entrance exam of the country. JEE Main is the first leg of admission into the IITs. More than 2 lakh candidates who clear the cut-offs for JEE Main will appear for that second stage of the exam. Well, out of these, around 11,000 will get admission into the IITs. So this cycle which starts from 11 lakh candidates ends up at around only 11 thousand candidates getting admission into the IITs. During this cycle, many candidates who had great scores, and truly deserved, but are left out and don’t get into an IIT.

Well, the good thing about JEE Main is that IITs are not the only colleges that grant admissions through this process. Under JoSAA, all the NITs i.e. National Institutes(s) of Technology, IIITs i.e. Indian Institute(s) of Information Technology and some Government Funded Technical Institutions also accept JEE Mains scores for admissions. Many of the NITs have been present in our country for a long time and have made an impressive image of them. Some of the NITs are nowhere behind some IITs in terms of knowledge and research and are thus amongst the most desired colleges under JEE Main. There are total 31 NITs in India at the moment, and they have around 18000 seats in them.

The Top 5 NITs

The Top 5 NITs of the country that have great respect and reputation and they certainly fall amongst the list of best engineering colleges of the country. Although there might be a little different in the list of Top 5 NITs on different locations, generally, the below-mentioned list is accepted as Top 5 NITs, take a look: –

  1. NIT Tiruchirapalli (Also called NIT Trichy), Tamil Nadu
  2. NIT Rourkela, Odisha
  3. NIT Surathkal, Karnataka
  4. NIT Warangal, Telangana
  5. MNNIT Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh

These 5 NITs, combined, have around 4000 seats, which is definitely a very good number. However, since these are the best league of NITs, their cut-offs are also high. So to get your favorite branch at any of these colleges, you certainly need an impressive score/rank in JEE Main exam.

The Rest, Older NITs

Apart from the top 5 NITs, there are several others which have been established for a long time. Although they could not get their name into the list of top 5, still they are very good colleges and are desired by a lot of candidates. They are 15 in number and hold a healthy number of seats. Here is the complete list of other older NITs which candidates can aspire for: –

  8. MANIT Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
  9. MNIT Jaipur, Rajasthan
  10. NIT Jalandhar, Punjab
  11. NIT Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
  12. NIT Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir
  13. NIT Patna, Bihar
  14. NIT Raipur, Chattisgarh
  15. NIT Agartala, Tripura

Candidates should take care that this is not a ranking list of the institutes. The readers should not draw any conclusions regarding which college is better and which is not on the basis of the above-mentioned list.

The Newer NITs

From 2007 or so, there has been a push from the government to establish more IIMs, IITs, NITs and IIITs. Under this league, many new NITs have been established. Although these NITs may still lack some features when compared to the older ones, they are making very good progress. Also, the seats in these colleges are increasing year by year, which is great news from the candidate’s perspective. This list of these new NITs is as follows: –

  10. NIT Uttarakhand, Srinagar, Uttarakhand
  11. NIT Andhra Pradesh, Tadepalligudem, Andhra Pradesh

With this list, it is clear that there are a lot of colleges beyond IITs, which are very good and desirable. Therefore, candidates must keep their options open and must be aware of such things. But still, at the moment, the focus should be on JEE Mains 2019 preparation. All the best!
